Collectiu 1080, formed by Renan Camilo, Marla Jacarilla, and Mònica Rovira, was created by Santa Mònica in Barcelona as an artistic research group. They did not know each other and had never worked together before. The internal dynamics led them to also take on other roles, such as programing the “Video Tuesdays”, the center’s periodical audiovisual programme. In this meeting, they will share their work dynamics, their configuration, and their individual specificities as well as revealing some of the premisses that have converted them into a institution in the context of Santa Mònica.
The session includes the screening of a short-film commissioned to Mònica Rovira, a member of the collective, as a report on the exhibition cycle The tradition that runs through us.
This event is part of the parallel programme of the exhibition Prototypes of insituting desire. Santa Mònica to Sismógrafo, curated by Clara Laguillo.
Marla Jacarilla (Alcoy, 1980) Visual artist, writer and film critic. She develops her work through techniques such as performance, video art and installations. She is constantly looking for links between plastic art, new technologies and literature to develop a fragmented narrative sprinkled with fiction that the spectator is invited to recompose. She has participated in group exhibitions at MACBA, Fundació Tàpies, Fabra i Coats Centre d'Art Contemporani, Centre d'Art La Panera, La Capella and Centre del Carme, among others. She is currently a member of the editorial team of Filmtopia, a website specialising in films made by women.
Mònica Rovira. Filmmaker and researcher. Graduate in Audiovisual Communication and Master's Degree in Creative Documentary by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Graduate in Film Directing from FAMU (Academy of Performing Arts) in Prague. Starting with Ver a una Mujer (2017), she investigates filmic language as a place from which to ask questions, the tension between desire and writing, the ways of narrating what happens to us, and the world through what happens to us, through what crosses us. With others, for others. A practice that focuses on the vulnerability and temporality of bodies, as well as the spectral relations that cross and overflow the images. She rehearses the writing of the self in film, constructing a voice in transit that questions identity. She is currently developing a new film, based on the project Them, the Water and Me, promoted by the centre La Virreina (2024).
Renan Camilo. Graduate in Philology and Literature (USP-Brazil), diploma in Audiovisual Ideation and Creation (UAB) and master's degree in Film Curating (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola). He was production assistant and curator for the parallel activities of the Barcelona Independent Film Festival, l'Alternativa. He participated in the curatorial process of the exhibition Zin Ex. Cuerpo y Arquitectura at the Tabakalera Cultural Centre. At Santa Mònica he participated in the exhibition Utopia Rambles. In 2023 she received the Sala d'Art Jove curatorial grant. He is currently working on a doctoral thesis on applied research in the Department of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature at the UB.
